MY WAVE Training Experience- Alumnus-Kingsley Chukwu

MY WAVE TRAINING EXPERIENCE

The West Africa Vocational education (WAVE) program is the brain child of Misan Rewane.  It is designed to help train unemployed youths in the country and give them employment opportunities in the service industry. I am one of the benefactors of this program and I want to share my experience with you.
I got admitted into the program in august 2016. I live in Lekki so my training centre was at the vocational training school at Agungi just off the Lekki-Epe expressway.  The admissions officer told me the training was going to be hard but I didn’t care. The thing is, I needed to get a job and I couldn’t find anyone who was hiring so I agreed.  Trust me when  they say they were not joking about the 150 hours of intensive training. It was hard, we stood everyday for 2weeks straight. Our facilitator was Somto a graduate of troy university, Alabama. I know the standing is part of the training but I just feel like Somto exaggerates it, probably because he looks like he is ex-military.
We were taught negotiation skills, communication skills, networking, personal hygiene (although I am a naturally neat person), selling techniques, punctuality, emotional intelligence, office politics, integrity, accountability, everything you need to get a job and skills required to keep you at your job. There were penalties for coming late, disturbing during training, using curse words, I mean penalties for everything.
I got to meet a lot of people who were ready to take charge and take their lives and destinies into their own hands. My training batch was 2.6 and we were 35 who started the training, but as at the time of job shadow placement, we were 31. Some people had gotten expelled and others left for reasons known to them
After the 2weeks of training we were assigned to job shadow (that is kind of what we call IT for universities). Job shadow is an opportunity to work in your chosen field for a short period of time to help you get a real life experience of what it would be like working in your chosen fields.
So, I’m sure you are wondering where I got posted to for my job shadow. I first job of preference was as a retail sales associate so I got posted to Ruff ‘n’ Tumble stores at the palms shopping mall Oniru.
So I am a few weeks away from graduation day, And I hope I do well at my Job shadow so I can get retained. I will let you guys know how it goes. Wish me luck.
