I was lucky to be part of the 3-week training program - Olayemi Osunrayi

Olayemi Osunrayi studied Agricultural Extension Management at the Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan. She derives joy in cooking and learning new things.

She was introduced to the WAVE training program by her mum, who works at Adamasingba Stadium, Oyo State. Osunrayi’s mum got to know about this opportunity to learn soft skills from an awareness program around Ibadan axis.

Being unemployed when she heard about WAVE, Osunrayi’s mum persuaded her to join the program to get a better employment opportunity. What surprised Osunrayi was that WAVE had to give assessment test, screened out applicants, and selected those qualified for the training program. She thus found herself lucky to be part of the three-week training programme.

Before WAVE, Osunrayi was undergoing a catering class to upskill herself. She, however, quit in order to attend the training. When asked why she made the bold decision, she said: “WAVE has more skills needed at the workplace so I weigh the options.”

During the training program, Osunrayi’s mum supported her with a thousand naira daily as transport fare. As quoted, “my mum supported me throughout the training program; they were some that couldn’t graduate due to transport fare but for me, mum was my helper.”

While job shadowing at FoodCo, Ibadan, she learned how to bake and work in a team to achieve common goals. Through hard work, she was retained at FoodCo as a kitchen supervisor. What excites her most on the job is the opportunity to work in the kitchen, where her passion lies.

Osunrayi hopes to own an international, standard restaurant in the nearest future. Her present job role is like a roadmap to achieve the dream job. She advises unemployed youth saying that they should: “always put hope in God, the maker of all things, and ensure to strive for knowledge.”
