The Effects of Technology on Job Opportunities

The Effects of Technology on Job Opportunities

The rapid development of technology has created a recurrent fear that there will be a downturn in the slope of unemployment. However, this judgment has proven to be incorrect. In fact, common standards of increased innovation has led to a rise in the living conditions of everyday people in different parts of the world, as there has not been a significant reduction in opportunities due to this innovation.
Consequently, the labour market has been reorganized and the effect is unmistakable. In being employable, intelligent and knowledgeable without embracing and adapting to the vastly changing technological development, there is hardly a marketable quality in this digital era to support. Skills without technical input and updates are gradually exposed to restriction and eventually, extinction.

Recently, being employable refers to a combination of mental capability and technological exposure. Technology has created an exposure for industries to the global market, owing to the fact that the continuous development of science and technology has made the world a global village where the connectivity of every individual to this market remains unbroken.
With the advent of smartphones, the internet,  personal computers, and the likes, business organizations are exposed to the digital atmosphere placing job quality on the increase daily. In Nigeria specifically, technology has improved employment opportunities and increased chances of having a decent job with a corresponding pay.
Similarly, organizations have been created with a constant connection to this global traffic. For instance, Gr8jobs.ng; an online job advertisement platform, serves as a connection between employers and the unemployed populace. Through emails and SMS, job alerts are being broadcast to individuals with laptops and phones. Applications for these jobs are done online and oftentimes interviews are conducted online, saving cost and unnecessary organization of physical meetings.

The not-too-recent online platform of routing has created opportunities for people like Lara.Ng who probably sits in the comfort of her home whilst providing routes and alternatives for movement in Lagos. In like manner, Taxify, Gokada, MaxOkada. Ng, Alakowe taxi through technological advancements, have created opportunities for cyclists and drivers who have an updated knowledge of technology and can operate on this progress.
The comfort of online marketing, demands, and supply cannot be overlooked. Online sales platforms such as Jumia, Konga, Jiji, Yaoota and many more have provided opportunities for a large number of the previously unemployed populace as many of them are recruited as sales representatives, customer care representatives, delivery men, branch managers and many more. Shopping has been made easier and sellers can easily meet up to the demands of their clients.

Finally, the trend of vlogging and blogging has been a medium of employment through advertisement, news, content creation etc. For instance, the popular LIB began as a blog, providing news and pieces of information to curious readers and in turn generating income for the manager of the blog. Also, platforms like LinkedIn provide opportunities for people to be connected with employers and organizations. Even though the role of digital employment is more emphasized, it cannot be understated in it's provision of a means of livelihood for job seekers.
